SUSE 9.1 Professional PDF Print E-mail

During the last week I had the opportunity to test the Proffesional new version of SUSE 9.1. As is usually the first impression is often cheap hosting cheap web hosting FilesDownloads.net the most important, I was afraid to open the box. Collected a little courage I opened it. I could not go with admiration. SUSE AG postarala really to give SUSE. Yes it should appear each boxed version of GNU / Linux. In the middle of a consumer who bought the package is 2 books dealing with Linux: Administration Myspace Layouts krakow airport transfer dubbing Poland Guide "and" User Guide ", a package of CDs and the 2 disc DVD bilateral (DVD1 and DVD2 installation source), plus a package of regular CD needed for installation - total 7 discs. In addition, SUSE AG, the plate with a full version of the database SQL Anywhere ® Studio for Linux v9.0 and SUSE extra sticker with the logo - with the chameleon. That was a first impression.

I just want to know what's the big deal with Linux? I mean, if you're just Joe Schmo, with a PC it doesn't seem to make sense to me to choose anything other than Windows. Even, if you've got time to sort through the crappy docs, and scour the internet for clues as to how to get a program to work; what's the big deal? What serious benefits does Linux offer?  I want concrete actual benefits here, not the nerdy, It's Linux dood, down with Microsoft. I like having one universal OS.  It sure makes it a hell of alot easier to share files, and such.  I remember in the old days when, IBM PC's, were struggling to gain a foothold in the competing market.  The reason they won, was compatibility.  It really was pathetic, you had Apples, IBMs (they were referred to as IBM's, but they were just clones running DOS), Commodores, and  Amigas (sad to see them go). What I'm saying is, I don't really like the idea of Linux.  It's no better for all practical purposes than Windows.   To me, having a linux box is like preferring a BBS to the internet.

IMO: linux is not for the Home Computer (unless you are a sysadmin) - It is a secure, robust server operating system (if you know what you are doing) - so, you are correct: windows is better for the average PC user...

leave your Linux box on for the longest time, and it won't reboot unless you want it to.  (Latest record posted was 270 days, while someone reported NT being on for 17.  We had a Linux machine up for 90 days ourselves, and rebooted the thing because we wanted to stick a new piece of hardware in.)

To me, having a linux box is like preferring a BBS to the internet. Then you either: a. Have never had a Linux box b. Have never had a LInux box set up correctly c. Have no idea what Linux is all about d. Got burnt because you couldnt run Linux so now you are attacking it out of frustration. e. etc, etc............ In your analogy, the Windows box is the BBS..........less powerful, less flexible, Linux offers much more options then Windows, because the source is right there at your disposal.....take a little time to learn to utilize that fact, and you'll be amazed you ever even ran Windows.
