sed and awk are tools used by for users, programmers and administrators.  sed, so called because it is a Stream EDitor, is perfect for applying a series of edits to a number of files.  awk, named after its developers Aho, Weinberger and Kernighan, is a programming language that permits easy manipulation of structure data and the generation of formatted reports. For people who create and modify text files, sed and awk are power tools for editing. Most of the things that you can do with these programs can be done interactively with a text editor.  However, using these programs can save many hours of repetitive work in achieving the same result.
